Quick answer
Apple does not publish its interview questions, so use any "Apple machine learning interview questions" list as practice material. Start from the live job post and Apple's Machine Learning and AI careers page, then prepare four things: coding in Python or the language the role names, ML and LLM fundamentals, a design that respects on-device limits and privacy, and two project stories with measured results. Practice the 10 original questions below out loud and score them with the free self-check.
What the public careers pages emphasize
Apple's >Machine Learning and AI careers page describes several specialties, including data operations for Apple Intelligence, computer vision, data science and experimentation, and deep learning and foundation models. It lists key areas such as large language modeling, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic AI, hardware-aware model optimization, evaluation and experimentation, and it says the teams aim to deliver intelligence while protecting privacy. Apple also publishes research on its >Machine Learning Research site. This guide uses only these public pages as company sources and does not describe any team's actual questions.

Titles vary by team. Read the posting's key qualifications and preferred qualifications, and note any mention of on-device inference, specific frameworks, evaluation, or data pipelines. Those details tell you where to spend prep time. Because the specialties listed range from data operations to foundation models, two "machine learning engineer" postings can test very different skills.
Typical loop stages
The following is a general AI engineering industry pattern, not a verified Apple interview schedule. Stages vary by team, seniority, location, and current opening. Use it to structure preparation and ask the recruiter which stages actually apply.
- Recruiter conversation: role fit, team, level and timeline. Ask which rounds apply and what the team works on.
- Hiring manager or technical screen: your background plus a coding or ML discussion.
- Coding: practical problems with clean code, tests and complexity.
- ML or LLM depth: fundamentals and the specialty in the posting, such as vision, language models or evaluation.
- Design: an ML system or feature, often with constraints on latency, memory, power or privacy.
- Behavioral and team fit: collaboration across functions, ownership and attention to quality.
Round-by-round prep table
| Round | What to practice | Free resource on this site |
|---|---|---|
| Coding | Python data structures, tests and complexity out loud | Timed mock interview round |
| ML fundamentals | Transformers, overfitting, metrics, training vs inference | LLM interview questions guide |
| On-device and efficiency | Quantization, distillation, memory and latency budgets | Quantization in LLMs |
| Evaluation | Offline sets, human ratings, experiments, regressions | LLM evaluation interview questions |
| LLM application | Retrieval, agents, prompt design, safety | RAG interview questions |
| Behavioral | Two project stories with numbers and one honest failure | Answer self-check |
A focused preparation plan
Divide your time into three blocks. First, coding: solve practical problems out loud, write tests, and state complexity. Second, fundamentals tied to the posting: if it mentions vision, review convolution and vision transformers; if it mentions language models, review attention, decoding, fine-tuning and evaluation; if it mentions efficiency, review quantization, pruning and distillation with their quality risks. Third, design and stories: practice two designs where the constraint is device memory, battery or privacy, and prepare stories that show ownership and careful measurement.
A small project helps. For example, take a public model, quantize it, measure accuracy, latency and memory before and after, and explain the trade-off you would pick for a phone. Schedule the work with the study plan tool, price any cloud fallback with the LLM API cost calculator, and keep the >free Top 30 AI engineer questions PDF for review.
10 practice questions
practice questions, not leaked questions These are original, general AI engineer exercises, not claims about questions used by Apple.
1. On-device ML: A model is too large to run on a phone within your latency budget. What are your options?
Scoring points: - Names quantization, pruning, distillation and a smaller architecture, with the quality risk of each. - Measures accuracy, latency, memory and power on the target device, not only on a server. - Considers a hybrid design with a cloud fallback and its privacy implications.
2. Privacy: How would you improve a model using user data while protecting privacy?
Scoring points: - Minimizes data collected and processes on device where possible. - Mentions general techniques such as aggregation, anonymization, differential privacy or federated learning, with trade-offs. - Explains how evaluation still works without raw personal data.
3. LLM fundamentals: Explain how a decoder-only language model generates text and where latency comes from.
Scoring points: - Token-by-token generation with a causal mask. - Prefill vs decode phases and the role of the KV cache. - Mitigations such as smaller models, caching and speculative decoding, with trade-offs.
4. Evaluation: How would you evaluate a writing assistant feature before launch?
Scoring points: - Task definition and a representative test set, including hard and sensitive cases. - Human ratings with a clear rubric plus automated checks. - Launch criteria, guardrail metrics and rollback plan.
5. Computer vision: Design a photo search feature that works offline.
Scoring points: - Embedding model for images and text, an on-device index and update strategy. - Memory, battery and indexing time budgets. - Evaluation with relevance judgments across diverse photos.
6. Data: Your labeled data is small and noisy. What do you do?
Scoring points: - Audits label quality and agreement before modeling. - Uses clearer guidelines, relabeling or synthetic data with validation. - Keeps a clean held-out set to measure real progress.
7. RAG: Design question answering over a user's own documents.
Scoring points: - Chunking, retrieval and re-ranking with reasons. - Keeps personal data local where possible and respects permissions. - Separates retrieval quality from answer groundedness in evaluation.
8. Agents: How would you make an assistant that takes actions in apps safe?
Scoring points: - Confirmation for irreversible actions and least privilege per tool. - Defense against prompt injection from content the assistant reads. - Measures task success and unsafe action rate.
9. Debugging: A model update improved offline accuracy but users report worse results. Investigate.
Scoring points: - Checks for distribution shift between the test set and real use. - Compares versions on logged or newly labeled examples. - Adds the failing cases to the regression set.
10. Behavioral: Tell me about a time you held a high quality bar under a deadline.
Scoring points: - Specific situation and the trade-off you faced. - How you aligned others on the decision. - The measured result and what you would repeat.

FAQ
Does Apple publish its machine learning interview questions?
No. Apple publishes careers and job pages, not interview questions. Lists online, including this one, are practice material.
What should I emphasize for Apple ML roles?
Follow the posting. Apple's careers page highlights areas such as foundation models, computer vision, evaluation, hardware-aware model optimization and privacy, so be ready to discuss efficiency and privacy trade-offs in general terms.
Do I need iOS or Swift experience?
Only if the posting asks for it. Many ML roles focus on modeling, data or infrastructure. Check the qualifications list and ask the recruiter.
How long should I prepare?
As general guidance, many candidates plan four to eight weeks. Use the study plan tool to fit coding, fundamentals and design practice to your actual date.
Can I mention Apple's published research?
Yes, if you have read it and can discuss it accurately. Do not claim knowledge of internal systems you cannot support.
